Animation: release1.fli - see http://crusty.er.usgs.gov/flc.html for more information about .fli/.flc format. Advective correction of dye observations - cruise EN323. Numerical drifters are deployed at the space/time location of the dye release. The upward-pointing triangle is at the surface; the downward-pointing triangle is at 15m. The grey points indicate the geographic positions of the dye observations. As the ship occupies the cruise track, passive particles tagged with the observed dye concentration are injected into the model solution. At the end of the survey, the collection of particles represents an estimate of the synoptic distribution of observations based on the modeled velocities, from which the tracer distribution can be mapped. Note that the animation actually continues well beyond the end of the survey.
