R/V Oceanus, Voyage #449, Leg V (OC449_V) 8 October 2008 – 13 October 2008 Jeddah, Saudi Arabia - Jeddah, Saudi Arabia The research objectives are to: (1) deploy a surface mooring with meteorological buoy at 675-m depth near 22°10'N, 38°29'E, and (2) deploy two surface moorings and two bottom tripods at 30-40-m depth near 21°57'N, 38°45'E or 22°7'N, 38°55'E. The planned scientific activities include (1) bathymetric surveys to determine suitable deployment location prior to mooring deployments, (2) CTD casts to estimate sound speed for bathymetric surveys and to characterize the regional variability of temperature and salinity, (3) comparison of shipboard meteorological measurements to buoy measurements after deployment, (4) net tows for biological sampling, and (5) SCUBA diving for biological sampling.
