ONR Shelfbreak Primer

Contents of SeaSoar CD

This CD starts with a statement of the Project Objectives. A map provides a quick overview of the Study Region, and an AVHRR image from July 21, 1996 shows a sea surface temperature snap shot of the region.

The "heart" of the CD are three chapters with plots from each of the three cruises: The spring cruise (May 5-11, 1996), planned as a test cruise for SeaSoar's new bottom avoidance system, the summer cruise (July 26-August 1, 1996), and the winter cruise (February 15-22, 1997).

The figures include objective maps of SeaSoar hydrography, and sections of hydrography and acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) velocities. Cross-shelf sections are covered in greater detail, although selected along-shelf sections are included as well.

Each cruise chapter contains the processed SeaSoar and ADCP data in the form of average profiles in matlab ".mat" files. This format allows one to quickly select specific sections and generate color or contour plots. The few example "programs" of one or two lines will get any matlab user quickly off the ground.

Processing steps and related issues regarding the conversion of raw data to the processed data included here are presented in the data processing chapter.

Finally, some pictures from the cruises are presented in the Picture Album, including Arthur Newhall's awesome shots from the rough winter cruise.
