
Japan/East Sea Experiment
SeaSoar Component
Our group of scientists lead by Dr.
Craig Lee (APL) seeks to understand the processes that control physical
and bio-optical variability in the upper ocean of the East (Japan) Sea.
The group of SeaSoar scientists includes
Dr.
Kenneth Brink, WHOI, and Dr.
Burton Jones, USC.
In particular, we are interested in
-
the upper ocean response to strong wintertime atmospheric forcing at
the subpolar front,
-
the formation, subduction, and spreading of intermediate waters,
-
characterizing the transition from coastal to central basin waters.
SeaSoar's extensive sensor
suite for this cruise required the development of new data transfer
hardware and software, which were tested during a short
test
cruise in October 1998.
