Sea of Japan

Data from the Sea Of Japan using the WHOI BathyPhotometer. The dotted line shows the path of the Seasoar

The WHOI BathyPhotometer is a compact solid state instrument with a digital output.

Data from a recent cruise off the coast of California shows a time series from five hourly files for smoothed pressure (9-point running mean, pressure in dbar) and base 10 logarithm of bioluminescence . A subset from hour 6 provides a more detailed view of filtered and unfiltered pressure and bioluminescence.

Two consecutive night time crossings of the Polar Front during our recent cruise in the Sea of Japan/East Sea indicate a frontal signature in bioluminescence, with (in this case) higher values in warmer waters to the south of the front.

The files can also be obtained as jpeg and postscript files from the anonymous ftp site matisse.whoi.edu, directory pub/biol.
